Title: Princess in the Spotlight
Author: Meg Cabot
Publisher: HarperTrophy
Year: 2001

So I started to read a different book that I realized was not conducive to a good night’s sleep, which led me to start the second Princess Diaries book.

And I’ve got to say, I enjoyed it more than the first. I was looking at the GoodReads ratings, and the general consensus seems to be that this one wasn’t as good as the first. I really don’t why other than this wasn’t as familiar to the readers as the first book. Don’t expect to find very much—if any—of this book in the Disney movie.

Our hook: Mom is pregnant. By the Algebra teacher. Holy crap. And to me, as predictable as it was, I thought it was a great hook, and a great problem for a teenager to have to deal with.

This book was also was a lot less about high school drama. This was drama among family and friends. It wasn’t how much is Lana going to hate me today, or how beautiful Josh is, or how much I despise princess lessons. This was everything going on in the midst of that. From badly executed TV interviews to a wedding crisis, to a super model saga, this book was a lot less high school and a lot more randomly fun. All of this, I think, makes Mia that much more likable.
